Ose Oji na Anyara

“Ose Oji” (literally translated as “pepper used to entertain guests” actual translation is “spicy peanut butter”) na “Anyara” (Garden Eggs) is a snack amongst the igbo people of Nigeria served when guests visit.

This snack is also very important in ceremonial gatherings. Usually, after the “Iwa Oji” breaking of kolanut – The opening  event of  igbo gatherings, a tray is passed around with small plates of Anyara and dollops of Ose Oji. You will find Anyara na Ose Oji at every traditional Igbo gathering (family reunions, meetings, weddings, funerals, graduations, and more.)

Yesterday while visiting my local african store, i spotted some fresh beautiful garden eggs. Oo i had to have them. We also had some bottles of roasted groundnuts at home. What Joy!

Typically, Ose Oji is made with groundnuts, pepper, and traditional spices. I did not have the specific traditional spices at home so i used a bit of peppersoup spice, some salt, Cameroon dry pepper (which is quite hot with a deep rich flavor you cannot find any where else 🙂 ) and ginger.

It turned out amazing. It took a lot of discipline to not consume in the entire bowl. You should try this, for a spin on your PBJs, with some apple – a good pre-workout snack, and it is a good base for a peanut stew too.
